Teaching
I am very pleased to be a student of Mark’s. I leave every lesson with a wealth of knowledge and a new found enthusiasm to learn more about jazz. Not only is he an incredibly talented musician himself, but is an inspiration to me as a student. Mark has an amazing ability to make complex musical concepts understandable and incorporates the fun, knowledge and the discipline necessary to learn. – Tam Leach, March 2009
Mark is the jazz man! He has been teaching me jazz piano for 2 1/2 years, and he’s been a fantastic teacher. He has a great personal manner, has expertise in many different styles and includes a good mix of theory and practical into my lessons. Mark is encouraging and inspiring, and I would recommend him to any aspiring jazz pianist at any level. – Steve Woodfield, 24th February 2009
At the outset let me say that Mark is a great teacher! His enthusiasm and positive attitude are an inspiration. He continually presents challenges but always within reach if you are prepared to make the effort and he allows you to develop your own style. He relates well to people of all ages and is able to communicate at their level in a relaxed yet professional manner. I have also learned so much about the history and the legends of jazz. I imagine that children especially would find his lessons great fun. Thank you Mark for all the above! – Val Sutcliffe, February 2009
Performance
Georgia and Mark have created a new dimension in our restaurant. Their performances are consistently warm, energetic and rich. Their professional approach and ability to read different audiences must also be mentioned. This duo is a serious drawcard for customers. – Prohibition Restaurant, March 2009
Review – The final group in the extravaganza, Shaken Not Stirred, was the last act in a long night of jazz. Patrick Bleakley kept the beat with his dedicated performance on upright bass, while Stephanie Hearfield mesmerised the audience with her soulful vocals. Collaborations with Mark Baynes and Lile also added to an exciting performance, along with the impressive trio on horns. With a succession of solos displaying musicianship and an energetic groove, Shaken Not Stirred lived up to their name. – Nelson School of Music, 6th January 2009 Reviewed by Leonie Hall.
